Head of Engineering

Build the engineering system behind the world’s first strategic warning AI

Location — Remote within European time zones (EU/UK work authorization required)

About Anadyr Horizon

We create decision infrastructure for the age of strategic surprise. Our Agentic Systems Intelligence (ASI) runs millions of high‑fidelity simulations to surface hidden escalation pathways, giving national‑security, finance, and insurance leaders time to act when minutes matter. Fresh off our AI+ Expo debut, backed by the strongest mission-driven VCs, and featured by Business Insider and NDTV, we’re scaling fast to meet growing demand.

Your Mission

Be the hands-on technical and organizational leader of our distributed engineering organization. Our ASI-powered North Star platform is live. Your role is to own engineering execution, harden and scale the system, and build the team that will carry it forward. You’ll still be in the code regularly, and you’ll grow and mentor the team, set technical standards, and make the day-to-day decisions that balance customer needs, compliance, usability, and research innovation — ensuring we deliver products that are both scientifically advanced and operationally excellent. You will report directly to the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), who sets scientific strategy, research priorities, and external scientific leadership. Partnering closely with the CSO, you’ll translate research and product goals into scalable engineering execution — shaping how ideas move from concept to enterprise-grade, mission-critical AI systems.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership (still hands-on)

  • Establish clear ownership over engineering priorities, execution timelines, and delivery quality, freeing the CSO to focus on research and scientific innovation
  • Own and evolve system architecture for agentic workflows, multi-tenancy, observability, and compliance
  • Author and approve ADRs, maintain high standards for code quality, performance, and securityLead incident response, reliability improvements, and cost optimization
  • Contribute actively to backend and frontend systems (Python APIs, orchestration, data pipelines, React/Next.js dashboards)

Customer Feedback Product Alignment

  • Partner with research, product, and design to capture feedback from demos and pilots
  • Translate feedback into clear engineering priorities and improvements
  • Ensure engineering roadmap reflects customer value delivery as well as scientific advances

Compliance Security

  • Own compliance readiness: SOC2/ISO27001, FedRAMP/ENS-like requirements, data residency and comply with European standards when deploying in Europe.
  • Build compliance into architecture (audit trails, RBAC/ABAC, SBOM, supply chain integrity)
  • Represent engineering in customer security reviews and due diligenceUI/UX Enterprise Usability
  • Partner with the Product Designer to ensure UI/UX quality is a first-class engineering priority
  • Enforce performance budgets (LCP, INP, CLS), accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA), and internationalizationBuild reusable design systems and dashboards that make agent behavior observable and explainable

Prioritization Delivery

  • Orchestrate trade-offs across research, customer needs, compliance, and UX
  • Run lightweight prioritization processes (quarterly planning, weekly triad reviews) to align execution with mission impact
  • Balance short-term pilot delivery with long-term platform scalability and maintainability

Engineering Org Team Building

  • Hire, mentor, and lead a world-class engineering team (initially 3 ICs, growing further)
  • Establish lightweight but effective engineering processes (CI/CD, testing, on-call, release cadence)
  • Create engineering culture: clarity in design docs, design-to-code rigor, testing discipline, and operational excellence
  • Provide career development and coaching for engineers

Success Metrics by Dec 31, 2025

  • Pilot platform delivered and passing enterprise/Gov security reviews for pilots (not yet SOC2)
  • Engineering org scaled aligned with customer and organizational needs
  • Reliability ≥99.9% across critical paths; latency and accessibility standards consistently metInference unit cost/time-to-value reduced ≥30%
  • Monthly release cycle established for on prem and SaaS customers
  • Compliance path underway: SOC2/ISO in progress, ≥90% of customer security asks met
  • Roadmap milestones consistently delivered with Tech you’ve likely touched: LLM/agent orchestration, retrieval, tool calling; vector/RDBMS hybrids; streaming/ eventingCloud + Kubernetes; IaC (Terraform); secrets/KMS; OTel tracing; staging/prod isolationPython strongly preferred; Go/Rust a plus. Solid systems and networking instincts
  • Frontend (portal/dashboard): Next.js (React+TS, SSR/ISR); design system + tokens (Tailwind, Radix/shadcn) with Storybook; data-dense tables charts; schema-validated forms; i18n + WCAG 2.2 AA; BFF for authz/caching/pagination; real-time traces (WS/SSE); strict CSP, self-hosted assets, feature flags; e2e/unit/visual tests; perf budgets (LCP≤2.5s, INP≤200ms); OTel Web telemetry; offline/zero-egress for on-prem; Workers/WASM for heavy client work.

Profile

  • 10–12+ years in engineering, including 3–5 years in strong technical leadership rolesExceptional at bringing structure to creative chaos; thrives working with polymathic scientists and translating conceptual research into shipping code
  • Proven track record of building distributed systems or ML platforms into enterprise products
  • Hands-on coder: comfortable contributing in Python, orchestration, infra, and frontend stacks
  • Experience working closely with research teams to productionize novel methods
  • Strong background in compliance and security (SOC2/ISO, FedRAMP-like)Startup builder DNA: thrives in 0→1, fast-release environmentsExcellent communicator: crisp design docs, clear trade-off communication, motivating leadershipWe want builders who are all in. If you get fired up by mission-driven product, love rolling up your sleeves, and want to help scale something that matters, you will thrive here.

Company Culture

We value teammates who are deeply engaged with our mission and who bring a long-term ownership mindset. We value demonstrated commitment, accountability, and enthusiasm for building mission-critical systems. In return we offer meaningful equity, career progression, and a culture that recognizes and rewards dedication. We operate as a distributed team with quarterly in-person work sprints in rotating locations - time-boxed periods of deep collaboration and rapid progress. The rest of the year, you’ll have full remote flexibility across European time zones
