Scary Mommy is seeking an Associate Editor, News & Social to work across the News & Trending and Social teams. The Associate Editor will assist the Editor and Deputy Editor, News & Social in producing News & Trending coverage, as well as overseeing Scary Mommy and Romper’s Facebook, X, and Threads accounts. The Associate Editor will be responsible for ideating and writing news and trending pieces to be used on these platforms specifically.
The daily responsibilities for this role includes pitching and writing informative, clean, and engaging stories about topics and trends relevant to Scary Mommy’s reader’s interests. The Associate Editor will be responsible for using data and analytics to inform their story pitches, with the goal of growing traffic across Social platforms, as well as raising brand awareness for Scary Mommy and Romper.
Applicants should have at least 1+ years of writing experience with a proven ability to consistently brainstorm pitches with unique angles and turn in clean copy on a tight deadline. Candidates must also possess a strong individual voice and a deep understanding of the parenting landscape.
Applicants in this role should be comfortable appearing on camera for Editorial Social and Editorial Video, as needed. Applicants should have a passion for parenting content and be up-to-speed on current issues impacting families. The candidate should be fluent in all major social platforms, and possess strong communication skills. A great work ethic, ability to take initiative, and a deep understanding of Scary Mommy’s and Romper’s voice is a must.
This role is ideal for someone eager to grow and shape their writing and editing skills, and can be filled in a hybrid or remote capacity.
This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between BDG Media, Inc. and the Writers Guild of America East.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ability to multitask and adapt quickly
  • Write on-brand, timely, and/or trending pieces daily for Scary Mommy
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices, plus experience analyzing content using Google Analytics, Parse.ly, or other analytics tools
  • Assist in planning, staffing, and coverage of live and breaking events across a wide range of topics
  • Manage day-to-day posting for Scary Mommy and Romper on Facebook, X, and Threads.
  • Help manage strategy and execution of Scary Mommy’s digital issues
  • Use analytics tools to track growth across social channels and inform overall strategy
  • Produce regular platform reports and present insights to Scary Mommy’s editorial team
  • Sound editorial skills and editorial judgment
  • Ability to give and receive feedback

Candidate Profile

  • A knack for writing snappy and smart pieces and social media copy
  • A sense for what makes a Scary Mommy story, and firm knowledge of parenting culture, especially on social media
  • 1+ years social media and experience assigning, writing, and editing news and/or evergreen stories
  • Ability to turn in clean, accurate, well-sourced, and authoritative copy in a timely fashion
  • Ability to identify trending topics, emerging trends, and on-brand influencers
  • Firm knowledge of social analytics tools
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness to take direction and alter workflow with a sense of urgency
